Vic Nees (*Mechelen, Belgium 8-3-1936)

Compositions

Vic NEES was born in Mechelen (Malines), Belgium in 1936. He studied at the Conservatoire of Antwerp. In the composition class of Flor Peeters, he was warded with a special prize. The Belgian government granted him a schollarship to study choral conducting under Kurt Thomas in Germany.

Since 1961 he was producer of choral music at the Flemish Radio in Brussels. He was also conductor of the Radio Chorus from 1970 to 1996. He played an important role in the amateur choir movement of his country and adjudicated in many international competitions (Arnhem, Arezzo, Cantonigros, Cork, Malta, Neerpelt, Tours, Varna). He is now a member of the Belgian Royal Academy.

As a composer, he mainly devoted himself to vocal music. His choral works are noted among the most remarkable of the last decades in Belgium.

Prizes: Eugène Baie-prize (1973), AGEC-prize in 1990 for ‘Regina coeli - Blue be It', Visser Neerlandiaprijs and Vondelprijs (1995).
